You would think with all the repair feedback data from building millions of them they could make them last.

There was a post on slashdot some time back which stated that $5 in nickel would keep a car from rusting to pieces as it aged. Automakers have to sell a continuous stream of new cars, and their business would be a lot more difficult if their old cars didn't predictably fall apart.
